      Construction, leathers and soles

The boots in this selection are built with a Goodyear welt: a leather welt joins upper and sole via a stitch. The practical benefit: once worn out, the sole can be replaced while the rest remains intact. Red Wing Shoes is an American brand bearing the name of the Minnesota town where it has been crafting boots since 1905.

The875 Classic Moc Toeis the benchmark of the selection: an Oro Legacy upper, built on last 8D, featuring a Goodyear-welted Traction Tred sole. Leathers vary by model: Oro Russet on the8875 Moc Toe, Amber Harness on the8111 Iron Ranger, suede leather on the8836 Moc Suede Chocolate. In our Formia store, this selection sits alongside the other American workwear and heritage brands we carry: Carhartt WIP, Filson, Chesapeake's, and Sebago.

      Iron Ranger

The Iron Ranger draws its name from the Mesabi Iron Range, the mining region of northern Minnesota, taking inspiration from the local miners. Compared to the Classic Moc, the toe construction differs: the Iron Ranger drops the Moc Toe design. Featured models include the8084 Iron Ranger Blackand the8111 Iron Ranger Amber Harness.

How to choose Red Wing boots

      The model

For a first pair, we recommend a Classic Moc in black or brown featuring its iconic moc-toe profile. For a rounder toe shape, look to the Iron Ranger or the Blacksmith; for a low-top option, choose the Oxfords.

      Sizing

Built on American lasts, fit varies by model: the 875 uses last 8D, where the letter denotes a standard D width. Sizing on one model does not automatically transfer to another. It is best to try them on with the socks you plan to wear—thicker during colder months—and allow for a break-in period as the leather softens and conforms to your foot over time.

      Smooth vs. suede leather

Smooth leather acquires marks and develops a unique patina over time, making every pair distinct. The suede on the 8836 features a matte, textured surface that requires a brush and dedicated suede care products rather than standard leather conditioners.

      Budget considerations

These boots represent a premium investment piece: Goodyear welt construction allows for resoling rather than replacing. Socks and care products serve as the entry points to the selection.

      New arrivals and core staples

Among the items featured, the autumn highlight is the 8809 Classic Moc Tidal. The remainder of the range consists of carryover core models. The 875 and 8138 have been part of our online store catalog since 2023: timeless styles designed to transcend seasonal trends.

      Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Red Wing Iron Ranger and Classic Moc?

The Classic Moc features a Moc Toe design inspired by traditional moccasins. The Iron Ranger adopts a capped round-toe design, named after the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota. The distinction comes down to aesthetic and leather choice: Iron Ranger options include black and Amber Harness, while Moc styles feature Oro Legacy, Oro Russet, and suede variants.

How do Red Wing shoes fit?

Built on American lasts, sizing varies across models. The 875 is crafted on last 8D, representing a standard medium width. We recommend trying them on with your intended socks and expecting an initial break-in period while the leather molds to the foot.

How do you care for a leather boot?

Brush off dirt and dust, wipe with a slightly damp cloth, and apply a specialized conditioner sparingly to nourish the leather. Options in the selection include Oil Tanned Leather care products. Suede models like the 8836 require dedicated suede brushes and care formulas.

      Can a boot be resoled?

Yes, thanks to Goodyear welt construction: the outsole is stitched to the welt and can be replaced when worn down without affecting the upper. That is why a boot built this way is a long-term investment.
